Rectory in Boguszyce
The rectory standing beside the church has for more than a hundred years been one of the most important buildings of the former church complex in Boguszyce. Its history links the pre-war Evangelical parish with the post-war history of the Catholic community.
The house beside the church
The rectory stands directly beside the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The building was erected in the late 19th century and originally served the local Evangelical pastor and his household.
It was not merely the pastor’s private residence. The rectory also served as the parish’s administrative base, a place where services were prepared, correspondence handled, documents stored and residents received. Together with the church, school and cemetery, it formed the religious centre of old Boguszyce.
The pastors’ rectory
Until 1945, the church in Boguszyce belonged to the Evangelical community. Successive pastors lived in the neighbouring rectory, providing pastoral care for the villagers and managing parish affairs.
Archival photographs from the 1920s and 1930s show the rectory as an important part of the village centre. The building appears in views together with the church, inn and shop, clearly showing how closely the most important places of social life in old Boguszyce were grouped together.
From an Evangelical parish to a Catholic one
Construction of the rectory
A house is built beside the church for the local pastor and the parish administration.
In old photographs
The rectory can be seen in archival photographs of the church complex and the centre of pre-war Boguszyce.
Home of Evangelical pastors
The building serves the pastors of the Evangelical parish, to which most of the village’s pre-war residents belonged.
Catholic parish
After the Roman Catholic parish in Boguszyce is established, the building remains connected with the local community and serves as a parish house.
More than a clergyman’s home
The history of the rectory is inseparably linked with the history of the church and the residents of Boguszyce. For decades, this was where decisions concerning parish life were made, ceremonies prepared, records kept and people in need of conversation or help received.
The building also recalls the profound change that took place after 1945. The former German and almost entirely Evangelical community left the village, and new residents, predominantly Catholics, took their place. The rectory, like the church, retained its religious function, although it now served a different community.
Surviving photographs show that the rectory has long been part of one of the most recognisable views of Boguszyce. It does not dominate the landscape as the church does, but remains a quiet witness to everyday life, religious changes and the history of the local parish.
Available studies date the present rectory to the late 19th century. Detailed information about its construction, successive residents and furnishings requires further archival research.
