Former estate manager’s manor in Boguszyce
A building has survived in Boguszyce that for many years remained in the shadow of the better-known palace. On old maps and photographs it appears as part of the former manor farm, while local studies sometimes describe it as the former manor of the estate owner or the estate manager’s house.
Although it was not a representative residence like the later von Randow palace, it played an important role in the estate’s everyday operation. It may have been from here that the economic life of the former manor farm in Boguszyce was managed.
Within the estate
The former manor stood within the first, older manor farm in Boguszyce, shown on old maps as Gut Bogschütz. This complex was located near the church and cemetery, and its layout included several farm and residential buildings.
According to local studies, even before 1945 the entire manor farm consisted of 5 buildings, inhabited by around 28 people who worked on the estate and in the fields. The manor building was the most important structure in this part of the complex - it served as both a residence and the administrative centre of the farm.
„Schloss”, but on a more modest scale
On old German postcards, the building was sometimes labelled Schloss or Schlösschen. This name can be misleading, because it did not refer to a large palace in the later, more representative sense, but rather to an old manor house within the estate - a residence connected either with the owner of the property or with its administration.
In practice, the building may have served a dual role: on the one hand as an older residence connected with the owners of the manor farm, and on the other as the home of the person managing its day-to-day operation.
The role of the estate manager
The estate manager was one of the most important people in the manor farm’s organisation. He was responsible for the daily supervision of workers, fields, farm buildings, livestock, harvests and the organisation of work.
If the old building in Boguszyce served as the manager’s house, this may have been where decisions were made concerning the running of the estate, accounts, allocation of duties and communication between the owner and the manor farm staff.
Houses of this type were usually more practical than representative.
They nevertheless formed an important centre of local economic life - combining
residential, administrative and organisational functions.
From manor house to school
Accounts concerning the former Evangelical school indicate that the building at number 72 was not originally constructed as a school. It formed part of the local manor farm complex and only later was adapted for educational purposes.
Such changes of function were not unusual. In small settlements, existing buildings belonging to the parish, estate or municipality were often used for teaching. In Boguszyce, the former manor or manager’s house may have served this purpose for a time.
After the school moved to a new location, the building once again returned to residential use. Today it is an important remnant of the former manor farm complex and one of the few surviving material witnesses to its history.
The name of the building is not entirely unambiguous
In different studies, the building is described as the former manor of the estate owner, old manor house or estate manager’s house. The safest conclusion is that it belonged to the older manor farm complex and served residential and administrative functions.
For this reason, it can be described on the website as the former estate manager’s manor, with the clarification that older sources also refer to it as the former manor of the estate owner.
A historic witness to everyday estate life
The former estate manager’s manor in Boguszyce was not as grand as later aristocratic residences, but that is precisely what makes it so interesting. It is a building connected not only with the history of the family and landed property, but also with the everyday work of the manor farm, the organisation of local life and the changes in its function over the years.
Its history shows how former estate buildings could over time become schools, residential houses and ordinary elements of the village landscape — even though they conceal a much older story.
